FAQ’s FOR SUMMER EMPLOYMENT
FAQs
“What is summer stock?
Summer stock theatre is any theatre that presents stage productions only in the summer. The name combines the season with the tradition of staging shows by a resident company, reusing stock scenery and costumes. It is often viewed as a starting point for professional actors.
“Where is Millbrook located?”
In Mill Hall, PA, conveniently located off Route 80 in Central PA, It is 3.5 hours from New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore; 2 hours to Pittsburgh and 4 hours to Washington, D.C. We are 45 minutes to State College (home of Penn State) and 25 minutes from Williamsport (the closest Starbucks).
“Is Millbrook really housed in a barn?
Yes, it’s a barn! Constructed over 125 years ago as a dairy farm. Converted into a single-stage theatre in 1963, and in the 80s, a cabaret theatre opened in the once-old milking station. The two theatres are the Ryan Main Stage, a 235-seat three-quarter thrust, and the Poorman Cabaret, a 100-seat black box. We also have a small stage in the Courtyard, lobby, and bar.
“How many shows do you produce a season?”
In recent seasons, Millbrook has reduced the number of summer productions. We now host two to three mainstage shows and two to four cabaret performances, which may include plays and musicals. Additionally, we produce a Saturday morning TYA (Theatre for Young Audiences) kids’ show and a late Saturday night courtyard cabaret. We also offer a summer theatre camp for kids, teens, and occasionally adults.
During the off-season, we present one fall production and a holiday show featuring the Millbrook Playhouse Youth Ensemble.
“How long is a typical summer contract?
Staff and intern contracts typically last between 10 to 12 weeks, beginning in late May and continuing until mid-August. Occasionally, we hire set and costume designers on shorter contracts as well.
Actor contracts can vary in length: they may cover a single show for 3 weeks or consecutive shows for 6 to 9 weeks. Some productions require actors to sign back-to-back contracts, meaning they will rehearse one show during the day and perform another in the evening. Additionally, some actors may sign longer contracts based on the specific production and their availability. Occasionally, we hire set and costume designers on shorter contracts as well.
“What is a typical day like at the Barn? “
There is nothing “typical” about a day in summer stock. The company generally begins its day at 9:00 AM. Each department has a designated lunch break, typically scheduled between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM. Work usually pauses around 5:00 PM for a dinner break. After dinner, there’s a break, and depending on your department, you may either return to work or prepare for evening performances or work calls. Then, the cycle repeats the next day.
“How do tech days off work?”
Based on the performance and change-over schedule, the staff’s day off will be either Sunday or Monday. Stage Managers and Box Office staff will alternate their days off between Monday and Tuesday. Each department can adjust the schedule depending on the show’s progress.
“What is the rehearsal schedule days off like for the actors?”
Each show typically rehearses for 10 to 12 days. The first week focuses on assembling the show, with technical rehearsals beginning the following Monday through Wednesday. Between weeks, actors are given a 24-hour rest period. Invited dress rehearsals on Thursday, and the opening performance is on Friday. The show usually closes the following Sunday, for nine performances total. Some shows may run for three weeks, between 12 to 15 performances.
If an actor is involved in back-to-back shows, the rehearsal process for the next show begins again on the Sunday or Monday of the opening weekend. The schedule may differ from show to show and year to year; however, productions following a three-week run generally have more rehearsal time. Please note that this schedule is always subject to change.
“Where do I stay when I am working at Millbrook?
We provide housing in local rented homes, with availability varying from year to year. All accommodations are shared with fellow staff members; everyone must share a bedroom. These accommodations are typically located in Lock Haven, PA, or the surrounding areas, usually within a 5-10 minute drive from the theatre. However, exceptions may occur depending on housing availability.
Mill Hall is a small town with numerous shopping and dining options. We are conveniently situated across from a Walmart and Sheetz. Lock Haven University is just ten minutes away and offers a “bigger” small-town experience. The downtown area features several nice restaurants and shops. It is a forty-five-minute drive to State College, which offers more shopping and nightlife options. Overall, the area has a lower cost of living.
“Can I bring my car? “
Yes, it is highly recommended that you bring your vehicle. If you do not have a car, some of our housing options are within walking distance of the Playhouse. Please note that we cannot 100% guarantee transportation on-site.
“Can I bring my emotional support animal with me?”
We love animals; however, since all the housing is shared, we cannot accommodate any pets.
“How do I get to and from Mill Hall at the beginning and end of my contract?
Round-trip travel bus fare NYC/Philly or the equivalent amount in travel reimbursement.
“How do I get cast in a show?”
To remain accessible, Millbrook will continue holding virtual submission and callback processes for the summer season. See the casting page.
The Millbrook Playhouse encourages everyone with every experience to submit to our summer season. Note that the age ranges and genders listed reflect those of the character, not the actor we will cast. Please submit for all characters for which you feel you would be appropriate.

We are a non-union company; therefore, we cannot give Equity points.

For more details, please visit our employment page.
“How do I apply for a tech internship?”
To apply, please submit your resume and references. We hire interns specializing in one department, such as props, costumes, lighting, or company management. Technical interns often move between departments, and some may even perform on stage occasionally!
“Does everyone have to help with the strike?”
Yes, everyone, no exceptions! We will not assign you to anything you are uncomfortable with, but it’s a great way to learn a new skill. And there is always sweeping to do.
Word to the wise: Summer stock is an excellent opportunity to enhance your resume, gain hands-on experience, and develop as an artist. You’ll have the chance to network and collaborate with individuals from all over the country, each at different stages in their careers.
