Our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Pledge

Millbrook Playhouse, an Equal Opportunity Employer, commits to creating equitable, inclusive work environments and productions and is proud to join the theater community in ongoing efforts to create more nurturing and sustainable production models. Guided by the We See You White American Theater Coalition, BIPOC theater makers, and industry professionals working for progressive change, the Millbrook Playhouse pledges the following:

  1. A land acknowledgement posted in the lobby, and printed in the play bills of productions reflecting on our history and future obligation to the Susquehannocks, Delawares (Lenape), and Iroquois, and subclans.
  1. Hire seasonal staff, artists, and administrators with careful purpose to celebrate and represent the variety of humanity, including: gender identity, sexual orientation, age, religion, cultural and ethnic identity, and differently abled individuals both neurologic and physically.
  1. All season staff will participate in a one hour pre-production, remote meeting to review our handbook to set company wide expectations on inclusion, safety, and professionalism. Directors and choreographers will also participate in a one hour pre production run by the Artistic Director to discuss intimacy coordination, community agreements, and rehearsal schedule and standards. Each individual cast will then meet on the first day of rehearsal to create Community Agreements that will guide their rehearsal process so rehearsal rooms are as safe and inclusive as possible.
  1. Transparently present maximum rehearsal/obligation schedules to all positions upon hiring and, to the best of the Millbrook Playhouse administration’s ability, collaborate with potential staff members to cater to personal needs including but not limited to: family care, medical appointments, religious practices, neurodivergence, and physical limitations.
  1. For individuals involved in late night / overnight load in, pledging a full day off after overnight work. If additional staff is required to avoid overnight work, the Millbrook Playhouse administration will do our best to allocate those staff resources to departments in need of support.
  1. Anyone on staff asked to present in a costume (primarily our season performers) will communicate during a pre production conversation with the design team and Artistic Director about any body, hair, and personal needs for their costume. Depending on the needs of the costumed staff member, more communication may be scheduled to ensure their needs are met by the administrative and design team.
  1. Provide support for staff / volunteers who may need to pump breast milk including a private area with a lockable door, a chair, extended breaks, accessible outlet, and a place to refrigerate milk.
  1. The Artistic Director will be available for in person meetings with staff with an open door policy, and staff can speak freely without fear of retaliation or future employment as outlined by Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) guidelines. If the staff member’s concern is with the Artistic Director, company management will coordinate with that staff member to organize a meeting with another administrator from The Millbrook Playhouse to have their concerns addressed.
  1. Include pronouns on all administrative communications and company biographies.
  1. Utilize online casting and hiring practices, including video submissions, live virtual or filmed callbacks, and remote interviews, to remove the economic barriers that are associated with in person auditions and interviews including, transportation, hair and makeup, housing, work schedule, and other barriers that are present.
